Timber Tongs is led by Pete Tong who gained his NPTC / City & Guilds qualifications from Plumpton College:

  • Chainsaw and Related Operations

  • Felling and Processing Small Trees

  • Climb Trees and Perform Aerial Rescue

  • Operate a Chainsaw from a Rope and Harness

  • Safe use of mobile elevated work platform

  • Competence in Manually Fed Woodchipper Operations

  • First Aid plus forestry unit

  • Certificate in Forestry and Arboriculture

As well as providing tree services across Sussex, Pete volunteers with the South Downs National Trust Ranger team every week, supporting their efforts to care for over 5,195 hectares (12,838 acres) of natural resources and protected areas including chalk grassland, beech hangar, heathland, woodland, farmland, coastline and river in the 90 miles between Winchester and Eastbourne.

This passion for conservation and environmental responsibility is equally applied to the way we work at Timber Tongs in the advice we give, the approach we take and the equipment we use. Where possible we use chainsaws and hedge trimmers with environmentally friendly lithium-ion batteries for a quieter and healthier experience.

Where this is not possible we avoid using regular petrol which contains harmful substances such as benzene, olefins and aromatics. Instead we choose Aspen Alkylate Petrol which contains virtually none of these harmful substances, reducing harmful hydrocarbon emissions by up to 99%.

All waste we remove from site is taken to a licensed disposal site for recycling (typically biomass energy production).

Our equipment is independently checked for suitability and safety according to the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) as an integral part of our strict focus on health and safety for our colleagues and customers.

Timber Tongs is a limited company (registration no. 12506616) with Public Liability insurance of £10,000,000 (minimum required by West Sussex County Council to manage road traffic when working on trees over roads) and Employee Liability of 10,000,000 underwritten by Chaucer Insurance Company DAC.
